In class we talked about a very controversial and serious topic the Burkini ban. A quick summary of the burkini is that it is a full body swim suit used as a way for Muslims to follow the practices of their religion while being able to have a fun day at the beach. Seems harmless enough right? According to France this article of clothing is completely wrong, and is in the process of being completely banned. They used lame excuses such as its “unhygienic” to ban the burkini. This makes no sense as full body suits are commonly used for diving. The real reason the Burkini is banned is they see it as a symbol of religious extremism. The see the Burkini as an expression of a political project, and have asked Muslims to be more discrete. Some citizens of France even compared it to Christians swimming with giant crosses. France is a country that is notorious for being discriminatory towards people of Middle Eastern decent. The government knowing this is terrified of a society competing of religious societies. Their effort to stop this is to pick sides, and attempt to ban the burkini. Personally as a man of Middle Eastern decent I find this extremely offensive. They are trying to block out a whole religion from expressing themselves in everyway possible. Their negative views towards Muslims is completely stereotypical and insanely offensive. If this same event happened towards any other religion France would make it a much bigger deal.
